The Arium Leeds - EBB & Flood Container Benching System
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems were approached by Leeds City Council’s The Arium to design and install new container benching systems within Growing Zone 2.
The new system needed to be robust enough to support the production of young trees, while integrating seamlessly with the existing benching, transport systems, hatches and production handling lines.
The benches were manufactured to match the existing dimensions of 6 metres long by 1.65 metres wide. However, they were designed with increased depth and strengthened supports to accommodate the additional weight associated with young tree production.
As part of the installation, Ebtech installed approximately 270m² of concrete pathway to bridge the gap between the existing systems, central walkway and working areas. This required the removal of existing vertical end-screen supports, which were reinstated following completion of the concrete works to ensure the end screens continued to operate as intended. The installation also required careful coordination around existing electrical supply distribution and control boards.
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems installed a fixed transport system row at the front of the bays, incorporating specified crossover points to connect the existing system with the new installation. This allowed both systems to operate and interact seamlessly.
A further transport row was installed at the rear of the bays, providing full control of all 174 benches from either end of the glasshouse. This configuration improved the positioning and movement of benches throughout the growing area, providing greater flexibility and efficiency.
Following installation of the support posts and rails, the drainage gutter systems were installed, suspended and connected to the existing drainage network. A table flood irrigation system was also installed and connected to the existing mains water supply. This system will integrate with the existing water control system to provide automated water management for the flood bench trays.
