Lincolnshire Herbs - Screening Renovation
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems recently completed a comprehensive screening refurbishment project for Lincolnshire Herbs, one of the UK's leading commercial herb growers, based in Bourne, Lincolnshire.
Lincolnshire Herbs specialises in the year-round production of high-quality fresh herbs for the retail and food service sectors. Their modern glasshouse facilities produce a wide range of crops, including basil, coriander, parsley, mint and chives, where maintaining a tightly controlled growing environment is essential to ensuring consistent crop quality and productivity.
Working closely with the client, Ebtech delivered a phased refurbishment programme designed to modernise the existing screening systems while minimising disruption to ongoing crop production.
The Challenge
Following many years of operation, several of the existing screening systems had reached the point where major refurbishment was required. Damage to the leading edge profiles and push-pull tubes had affected the performance and reliability of the shade screens, while other areas of the glasshouse required new screen fabrics to improve climate control and crop management.
In addition, the client required a new blackout side screening system to provide improved light exclusion and environmental control.
Ebtech's Solution
The project was completed in carefully planned phases to allow the glasshouse to remain operational throughout the works.
The first phase involved the refurbishment of 3,584 m² of existing shade screening. This included replacing all damaged leading edge aluminium profiles and push-pull tubes before recommissioning the screening system.
The second phase involved the complete refurbishment of both the upper and lower horizontal screening systems within a separate glasshouse department, covering a total area of 7,168 m². As part of these works, the existing screen fabrics were replaced with new Svensson climate screens to improve crop performance and environmental control. The new screening specification comprised:
Upper screen: Svensson Harmony 4215 O FR energy screen.
These high-performance screens provide improved light diffusion, energy retention and climate management, creating a more consistent growing environment whilst reducing energy consumption.
The final phase of the project involved the design and installation of a completely new 140-metre power roller side screening system. The system was fitted with Svensson Obscura 10070 FR blackout cloth, providing exceptional light exclusion and giving the grower greater control over the glasshouse environment throughout the year.
Scope of Works
Refurbishment of 3,584 m² of existing shade screening.
Replacement of all damaged leading edge aluminium profiles.
Replacement of damaged push-pull tubes.
Refurbishment of 7,168 m² of upper and lower horizontal screening systems.
Installation of Svensson Luxous Light FR climate screen.
Installation of Svensson Harmony 4215 O FR energy screen.
Design, supply and installation of a new 140-metre power roller side screening system.
Installation of Svensson Obscura 10070 FR blackout cloth.
Phased installation programme to minimise disruption to commercial crop production.
The Result
The completed refurbishment has significantly extended the operational life of Lincolnshire Herbs' screening systems while improving reliability, climate control and energy efficiency across multiple growing departments.
The installation of the new Svensson climate screens has enhanced light management and environmental control, while the new blackout side screening system provides greater flexibility for crop production and improved control of the growing environment.
By carrying out the works in carefully planned phases, Ebtech successfully completed the refurbishment with minimal disruption to the client's ongoing operations, ensuring Lincolnshire Herbs could continue producing high-quality herbs throughout the project.
This project demonstrates Ebtech Glasshouse Systems' expertise in delivering large-scale glasshouse screening refurbishments and specialist environmental control solutions for commercial horticultural growers across the UK.
