Double H Nurseries - Screening Renovation

Ebtech Glasshouse Systems recently returned to valued client Double H Nurseries Ltd, one of the UK’s leading growers of ornamental houseplants, to complete a comprehensive Venlo glasshouse shade screen renovation covering 14,168 m², with the entire project successfully completed within a 3-week programme.

Based in the South of England, Double H Nurseries specialises in the large-scale production of high-quality indoor plants, including orchids, chrysanthemums, roses, and a wide range of foliage houseplants. Supplying major retailers nationwide, their operations rely on precise environmental control to maintain consistent crop quality and ensure year-round supply.

The project involved the full replacement of nylon top and bottom wires, steel drive wires, and sealing pelmets, alongside the installation of new drive shaft bearings and high-performance screening cloth.

A key feature of the installation was that all works were undertaken using custom-built gantries suspended from the existing monorail and high-level pipework system. This access method allowed the installation to be carried out safely and efficiently while the crop remained in place, avoiding disruption to production and eliminating the need for crop removal.

For this renovation, PhormiTex Lumina 60 O material was selected, delivering a 60% direct shading value while achieving energy savings of up to 25%. This advanced screening solution improves light diffusion and temperature control—critical factors in the successful cultivation of sensitive ornamental crops such as orchids.

The upgraded system will enable Double H Nurseries to better regulate light intensity and heat within the glasshouse, reducing plant stress and promoting uniform growth. For high-value flowering crops, this results in improved plant quality, stronger development, and more consistent blooming—ultimately enhancing presentation and extending shelf life for retail customers.

In addition, the energy-saving properties of the new screens support Double H Nurseries’ commitment to more sustainable growing practices, reducing overall energy consumption while maintaining the precise environmental conditions required for premium indoor plant production.

“The Ebtech screening team arrived promptly and worked closely with our growers throughout the installation, taking great care given the high-value crop within the glasshouses. They were well equipped with overhead gantries and maintained excellent communication, consulting with us at every stage—particularly when removing the existing material and replacing wires.

The new screen has been installed to a very high standard and is a significant improvement on the previous material. Visually, it is far superior, and its light-diffusing properties have already made a noticeable difference. We are currently trialling higher light levels on our Phalaenopsis crop using PAR meters and are achieving increased light penetration without any adverse effects.

The project was completed slightly ahead of schedule, and the team left the area clean, tidy, and free of debris. Overall, a highly professional service.”
