SCREENING FOR KERNOCK PARK PLANTS

Replacing the existing static plastic covers in one half of the glasshouses used for propagation.

Richard Harnett of Kernock Park Plants in Cornwall contacted Ebtech Glasshouse Systems to look at providing clear energy screens, replacing his existing static plastic covers they had been using in one half of the glasshouses used for propagation.

It was requested the screen had to be fitted to the bottom trellis beam under the existing shade screen, so as to serve as dual purpose propagation cover and energy screen to the retain daytime heat.

Richard chose Phormitex Bright, from the Phormium range for this purpose, as he had used this elsewhere on the nursery for over 10 years.

The cloth acts as an energy screen and has built into the fabric, a mesh that wicks any moisture accumulation to the top of the screen to avoid the drips and condensation problems that can cause ‘wash-out’ problems for young plant propagators growing in small module trays.

The screen was installed in one half only of the total glasshouse area, so they could use the other half for different growing regimes.

A wire screen system was chosen and installed as part of ongoing upgrade and investment work by Kernock Park Plants to the propagation production area.

The main challenges we had to overcome on this project included the 45⁰ angled heating pipes at one end of the glasshouse, the computer cupboard in one of the sections, but mainly having to attach and provide enough supports to attach all the drive and support wires to a trellis girder at one end of the propagation area due to this not extending the full length of the main glasshouse.

The project was carried out without too many complications over an area of 2,318m².
